Mom Has Dementia but Insists She's Fine. What Do You Do?

Your mom insists she's doing just fine. But you've noticed forgotten appointments, changes in her daily routine, or growing concerns about her safety. How do you offer help when she doesn't believe she needs it?

Watch our video about navigating difficult conversations when a loved one living with dementia resists assistance.

When Mom Says She's Fine, but You're Concerned

One of the most difficult experiences for families navigating dementia is recognizing that a loved one may need help before they're ready to accept it. Conversations about memory, independence, and safety can quickly become emotional.

1. Understand Why She May Resist Help

Some people living with dementia experience reduced awareness of changes in their abilities. Others may worry about losing their independence or becoming a burden on their family.

Rather than assuming she's simply being stubborn, consider what may be driving her response.

2. Avoid Arguments About Her Memory

Trying to prove that Mom has forgotten something may lead to frustration or defensiveness. Focus instead on understanding her feelings, offering reassurance, and finding practical ways to make everyday life easier.

3. Focus on Support, Not Taking Control

Introduce assistance as a way to preserve her comfort, routines, and independence whenever possible. Start with the concerns that matter most and involve her in decisions about support.

4. Pay Attention to Changes in Daily Life

Look beyond occasional forgetfulness. Changes in meal preparation, personal hygiene, medication routines, mobility, or household safety may indicate that additional support is needed.

If you notice new or worsening cognitive or functional changes, discuss them with her healthcare professional. Sudden confusion warrants prompt medical evaluation.

5. Take Small, Thoughtful Steps

Families don't always need to solve everything in one conversation. A gradual, personalized approach can help build familiarity and trust while addressing immediate safety concerns.
